"Jimmy Stewart from Mars."

- Mel Brooks (producer of Elephant Man) describing his director, David Lynch

THE FILM - Surprisingly, Lynch actually had relatively few offers even after the success of Eraserhead - he states he went to work "fixing roofs". He was eventually approached with the offer of The Elephant Man and recalled that as soon as he heard the words 'elephant' and 'man' they "made a little noise in my head." Going from a 5 year independant production financed by a newspaper route to directing Anthony Hopkins and Sir John Geilund in Britain proved to be a monumentous step for Lynch. The film did amazingly well, receiving 8 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. Click on IMDB for more information about the film.

THE POSTERS - For an early Lynch film that did so well critically and commercially, it is surprising that The Elephant Man posters don't go for extraordinary amounts in general. This may be due to the fact that there is generally only a single style of US posters available in different sizes. (Some of the sizes are very rare however.) There are some alternate foreign styles available - be certain to look at the strange Hungarian poster. For foreign posters, a general rule is that value increases if it is different than the US one sheet style.
