- Opening narrative in Dune

THE FILM - Initially Ridley Sott was slated to direct the film, but he opted out for "Alien". Lynch, who turned down the job for "Return of the Jedi", jumped on board "Dune" after reading the classic book by Frank Herbert. The film was a massive production with the largest budget of any of Lynch's works to date. Shooting for over a year in Mexico, (see the excellent book "The Making of Dune" for many additional details) the response from the crew was amazingly optimistic up to the point of the films release. Even Frank Herbert said "My God, we've got it!" after the film's initial screening for the cast and crew.

However, critical and commercial optimism was not to follow. The film performed amazingly poor both critically and at the box office. As one critic put it, "the enormity of the project pretty well crushes [Lynch's] artistic distinctiveness." Lynch later admitted "I sold out on Dune". Check out the IMDB for more information.

THE POSTERS - Large amounts of money were spent on promotional items, including posters. Several styles of US release were made - the only Lynch poster to do this very well with possibly the exception of Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive. Of importance are the three US advances, especially the "two moon" advance which is extremely rare and sells for hundreds of dollars.

A vast array of other promotional material is also available (commercial prints, promotional books, etc.) Though the film did poorly domestically, it still had a wide successful foreign release assuring a vast array of differing foreign styles, many with beautiful and unique artwork.
